After a standout career at Parkland High School in south Florida, Anthony Rizzo opted for a $325,000 signing bonus from the Boston Red Sox rather than a scholarship to play baseball at Florida Atlantic University. After three seasons of solid play and steady improvement Rizzo was included along with three other prospects and dealt to San Diego for All Star first baseman Adri?n Gonz?lez. He hit .365 in the first 52 games at the Padres Tucson, Arizona farm team and was called up to the parent club in June 2011. The move may have come too early as the first baseman struggled at the plate, hitting .141 and was demoted in July.

Rizzo, who bats and throws left handed, became expendable that winter when the Padres acquired Yonder Alonso from Cincinnati. The 6-foot, 3-inch, 240lbs Rizzo was traded to the Cubs and was called up, for good, in June 2012 and this time produced as soon as he arrived, as he was named the National League Rookie of the Month for July.

He continued to improve in 2013 hitting 20 home runs with 80 RBI and finished second to Arizona?s Paul Goldschmidt in voting for Gold Glove at first base. He then began a string of three consecutive All Star appearances. Rizzo?s 31 home runs, 101 RBI and a .278 batting average in 2015 earned him a fourth-place finish for Most Valuable Player. And he?s on pace to surpass all of his single-season marks.
