Sonny Jurgensen started playing high school football at New Hanover High School. He was then the backup quarterback on the 1954 varsity team at Duke University, taking over as starting quarterback in ?55.

In the 1957 NFL Draft, Jurgensen signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as their backup quarterback behind Bobby Thomason in ?57 and Norm Van Brocklin from ?58 to ?60. In 1960, during his time as a backup, Jurgensen won his only NFL Championship. His career with the Eagles ended in 1964 and was exchanged to the Redskins. In season following, Jurgensen was selected for the Pro Bowl and named second Team All-Pro. The 1965 season was memorable for Jurgensen with a comeback against the Cowboys including a 35-yard pass to Bobby Mitchell for the game win. In 1967, Jurgensen broke his own record, passing 3,747 yards and set the NFL single-season records for attempts and completions. His final season of 1974 would see him win his third NFL passing crown.

Jurgensen is often considered the finest pure passer of his time, earning three NFL passing titles. Of his records, Jurgensen holds the highest career passer rating for any player in the ?Dead Ball Era? pre-1978 of 82.62. His career holds the total of 255 touchdowns and 2,433 completions for 32,224 yards.
