Few fans would argue that Strasburg is one of the most dominating pitchers ? when he?s healthy. Injuries, not opposing hitters have been his toughest obstacle. His career mark of 4.58 strikeouts to walk ratio would place him second all-time among 20th and 21st century pitchers, just behind just White Sox hurler Chris Sales (4.67). He needs less than 100 innings to qualify. Reaching the 1,000 inning mark is also the only thing keeping him off the all-time list for strikeouts per 9 innings pitched (10.5), second only to Randy Johnson (10.6).

After being overlooked in the amateur draft out of high school, the Santee, California native attended San Diego State where he was coached by Padres Hall of Famer, Tony Gwyn. Strasburg began as a relief pitcher before Gwyn moved him to starter where he went 22-4 over two seasons, which caught the eye of every pro scout in the game.

The Nationals made Strasburg the number-one overall pick of the 2009 draft. After going 11-3 with a 1.70 ERA in the minors, he was called up to the parent club in June 2010 and won his Major League debut, striking out 14 Pirates over seven innings for the win. Collectors took note as his No. 37 jersey quickly became a top seller.

Unfortunately, within two months he was injured and required ?Tommy John surgery,? which mean at least a year of rehab. Nevertheless, Strasburg finished his rookie year, 5-3, with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in just 69 winnings.
