And They’ll Never Be Royal(s)

Sports have a funny way of messing with our sense of time.  When a team is struggling, seasons seem to take years to finish, and when your team is rolling, weeks fly by.  Now take that struggling scenario I mentioned and multiply it by 29.  Almost three decades of forgettable campaigns. Fans always get promised that next year it would be better.  We know the old sports adage, “Just wait until next year, we are so close”.  These past three seasons, the one team that could legitimately believe in that statement would be the Royals.

Kansas City has been on the cusp of the postseason the past few years.  Their essentially homegrown core had started to show signs of what everyone thought they could be.  No longer were these Royals the doormat of the AL Central.  They were competing with the best of them, and learning about who they were.  Their ownership never wavered on decision making.  Like any great organization – there was a goal, a path and an action plan to turn that goal into reality.  Last night in front of 40,000 screaming, delirious fans who have stuck with them through it all, it all came to fruition for the Royals.

Royals fan or not, if you have watched them this month, you have to be in awe.  9 straight postseason victories.  Not one loss. They have defeated the two winningest clubs in the AL via the sweep. They have ignited a flame in a city that has had sub-par sports for decades.  This team is as real as it gets.  A humble group of not yet stars who have put their unique skills together at the right time.  The Royals play baseball unlike any team in recent memory.  Stellar defense, quality starting pitching, timely hitting, sneaky power, lightning speed and the BEST bullpen we have seen in years.  This team is no fluke.  This is a team of destiny, built correctly, been through hell and back and finally having their day.

It’s a great story, a true underdog story that will not rest until they are on top of the podium again holding the World Series Trophy. The Royals have arrived, America.  Sit back and enjoy.

Puck Has Been Dropped

With all major sports overlapping in mid to late October, sometimes hockey does not get the coverage it is due.  With equal coverage or not, hockey is back.  One week into the fresh NHL season and we’re seeing a lot of the big names off to a hot start: Chicago, Montreal and Minnesota.  Hockey ratings has been growing year after year in the US.  Some of this can be explained by resurgence in postseason by major markets like Chicago and Los Angeles.  Analysts have picked a few “sleeper” teams to keep an eye on late in the season – Tampa Bay and Columbus felt that description. Young core, quality goaltending with some playoff experience. If you are more of a “player” driven fan, then you and I both are rooting for health for all the stars – especially Sidney Crosby who had missed significant chunks of time over the past few years.  Alex Ovechkin is poised for another monster year. And then there are those guys from Chicago – Kane and Toews have been magnificent in the playoffs and have Chicago thinking about hoisting the trophy again.  Plenty of intrigue this season and we will keep you posted on all NHL news.  Make sure to shop our great selection of NHL memorabilia.

Weekend Rehash

Is there anything better than an October sports weekend?  Conference play in NCAA Football, NFL Football, MLB Playoffs, Hockey, NBA is close to opening up.  Hard to argue there is a better time of the year for all encompassing sports fan.  If you were dragged out to the pumpkin patch or a family outing, here is your recap of the weekend of October 11th-13th, in bullet-point form.

  • Royals are on a roll. Make that 7 straight postseason wins for KC. Up 2-0 in ALCS.
  • Evenly matched Giants and Cardinals trade jabs in 1-1 NLCS heading to SF.
  • Mississippi State takes over #1 in AP Poll – quickest team ever to do so.
  • Seattle silenced at home by dominant Dallas Cowboys.
  • Reigning MVP Kevin Durant to be sidelined 6-8 weeks for OKC Thunder.
  • In all likelihood, Adrian Peterson’s season is over. Future with Vikings also cloudy.
  • Eagles and Chargers continue to impress, move to 5-1.

Plenty of great, compelling action this weekend with a full platter ready for next weekend.  Call off your plans now and get the potato chips ready for more Top 5 college football action, NFL Week 7 and MLB playoffs next weekend.

Unpredictable Football League

With another week in the books, lots of jockeying continues in both the NFC and AFC.  Handicapping NFL games is no longer an exact science.  Seattle, a team who dominates at home and I mean dominates – with only 1 home loss in the past 3 seasons took the loss against a “surprise” Dallas Cowboys team who has now rattled off five straight W’s.  There is no such thing as a lock in the NFL anymore.  The Browns made easy work of the Steelers.  The Calvin Johnson & Reggie Bush-less Lions go into Minnesota and win easy.  I suppose the only real constant would be the Raiders & Jaguars losing – other than that, it’s a very open league at the moment.  Denver has seen their share of close games, same goes with usual playoff mainstays Green Bay, Cincinnati and New England.  Six weeks into the campaign and many teams have tallied their fair share of bumps and bruises.  These next few games will go a long way in deciding who is for real and who should start prepping for the NFL Draft early.  If these first six weeks are any indication of what is next to come, all bets are off.
