2022-2023 Fantasy Football Undervalued Running Backs – Who Should I Draft?

As we are winding our way through the NFL pre-season, everyone only has one thing on their mind– Fantasy Football.

One of the biggest keys to winning your fantasy football leagues every year is to draft stud running backs. They consistently can get a solid workload on a game-to-game basis, helping your team win the week. No matter what round you are in, the best fantasy advice is to look at the board for a good running back that can help you win. Get a leg up on the competition this year with our list of running back studs that you should draft onto your team. Getting more value out of your selection helps teams win and that is what our list is about.

TOP 10 UNDERVALUED FANTASY FOOTBALL RUNNING BACKS

1. The top spot on our list goes the top rookie running back from last year, Alabama‘s Najee Harris. The Pittsburgh Steelers top fantasy option looks to inherit another full season as the 3-down back in the Steel City this year. Along with the tremendous upside he provides with his rushing ability, he also catches passes at an above-average rate, which will push him past other backs in a PPR format. With either Mitch Trubisky or Kenny Pickett throwing him the ball this year he should see plenty of opportunities.

2. The next running back is former Seminole, current Viking, Dalvin Cook who, even coming off a slight injury last year, is looking to regain top spot as a fantasy running back. Like Najee, Dalvin also catches passes at a high rate and in a Minnesota Vikings offense led by Kirk Cousins with two downfield weapons in Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen there will be a lot of space to operate in the underneath routes where Dalvin Cook presents a matchup nightmare 1-on-1 with linebackers. He even has more upside as a runner with high-end breakaway speed. However, with lingering injury risk he is only number 2 in our rankings.

3. In our number three spot we have Cleveland Browns running back, former Georgia Bulldog, Nick Chubb, who is looking to have a very increased workload following the suspension of Deshaun Watson. Having Jacoby Brissett is a nice backup, but the Browns will look to lean much heavier on their amazing offensive line with Chubb running the ball. While Chubb is a Top 5 running back, he doesn’t offer Top 5 receiving skills like some other RB1s do and they will look to take Chubb off of the field in those long 3rd down situations.

4. Our 4th RB is Tennessee Titans monster running back Derrick Henry. Henry is easily one of the biggest and fastest players in the entire league- two qualities that keep him at the top of the game in his 7th season. Always a favorite to rush for over 2,000 yards, he surpassed that mark in only 16 games in 2020. The Titans did trade their best receiver, A.J. Brown, to the Philadelphia Eagles, so that will reduce their passing game but will also cause them to lean upon Henry to help carry the load.

5. The 5th spot belongs to Kansas City Chiefs back Clyde Edwards-Helaire who enters the 2022 season with a lot to prove. After sustaining an injury last season, he looks to rebound with a bounce-back season. The LSU Tigers superstar had a great rookie season but did not impress fantasy managers last year. We are looking for Clyde to have a big third season after losing Tyreek Hill from this dynamic offense. There will be plenty of work to go around and that should help Edwards-Helaire get back on track.

6. The number six spot on our list is Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins, who also is looking to have a rebound season in 2022. He injured his knee last pre-season and missed the entire year. This offense is based heavily on the running backs handing the load to open up the rest of the playbook. Dobbins has been a standout since his college days with the Ohio State Buckeyes, running similar read-option concepts where he had a great deal of success. Dobbins looks healthy coming into camp and has massive upside for fantasy managers.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars second-year RB Travis Etienne Jr. is number seven on our list of undervalued running backs. Etienne, like Dobbins before him, missed out on the entire 2021 season. Unlike Dobbins, Etienne doesn’t have the same track record for fantasy managers to rely upon. Even with the unknown, we love where Etienne fits into this Jaguars offense. James Robinson tore his Achilles last December which has opened the door wide for Etienne to get all of the touches until Robinson can get back to 100%. No one knows any timelines on this injury, so until further news arrives, this bodes extremely well for the value of Travis Etienne on fantasy teams. If Etienne handles the workload well, Robinson could be the odd man out.

8. The eighth spot goes to Najee Harris’ older brother, New England Patriots running back Damien Harris. Harris was the 2021 fantasy breakout, scoring 15 touchdowns for the Mac Jones-led Patriots. The Patriots have had a committee approach at the running back position for quite some time and this type of approach usually gives fantasy managers huge headaches. However, Damien Harris looks to have an edge over fellow committee members Rhamondre Stevenson, Ty Montgomery and Pierre Strong Jr. Harris might not get back to 15 touchdowns, but he will be scoring plenty with Bill Belichick consistently trying to pound the ball into the end zone while in the red zone.

9. Super Bowl LVI Champion Cam Akers will be our number nine running back who is undervalued. Akers, in his third year out of FSU, will be the Los Angeles Rams starting running back Week One, even with the injury last season. Darrell Henderson is a solid backup but shouldn’t eat too much into the workload for Akers, who showed that he could be a running back that this high-powered offense can lean on. Akers is the complete package and can be a threat in the pass game as well. He is being drafted in fantasy leagues far too low and could help win some leagues this season.

10. Our final spot belongs to Georgia Bulldogs National Champion, Buffalo Bills rookie James Cook. Cook, who is Dalvin’s younger brother, is finding himself in a very favorable situation, similar to his sibling. Devin Singletary may be the starting running back for the Bills, but James Cook looks to be the favored third down back for Josh Allen to check down to, getting the easy first downs after Allen’s playmaking ability creates additional time in the pocket. James Cook is getting drafted fairly low in most drafts this year and can provide Top 20 running back value in PPR formats.

Kansas City Royals Memorabilia

Kansas City Royals Memorabilia
Right on the border of Kansas and Missouri resides Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals. The Royals franchise was dormant for nearly three decades until a core group of stars helped bring the passion back to the fan base. A long, trying rebuild finally ended in 2015 as the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets in the World Series to end a thirty-year title drought. General Manager Dayton Moore can take a lot of the credit for bringing winning baseball back to KC. Moore’s blueprint included the acquisition or drafting of Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, Yordan Ventura, Mike Moustakas and more key players. This group of star’s autographs were highly coveted after the final out in New York City. Autograph prices nearly doubled for all players on the active playoff roster. The best items signed by Kansas City Royals would be a 2015 World Series Baseball. These balls commemorate the amazing series against the Mets. Throughout the years, Kansas City autograph collectors and fans have collected autographed jerseys, bats, baseballs and photos. A good Royals collection must contain the past and present. It is relatively easy to track down a signature from a member of 2015’s club but to truly honor the tradition of the Royals, a walk down memory lane is in order to boost a collection. Which players should a collector target? Where can they find these exclusive signed Royals memorabilia items? These and more will be answered below.

1985 World Series Memorabilia
Missourians will never forget the “I-70” Series between the hated St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals. The Royals ultimately came out on top but it took them seven games to cage the Cardinals. Manager Dick Howser orchestrated through the American League gauntlet with a 91-71 regular season record and a 4-3 series victory over the upstart Toronto Blue Jays. Not every Game 7 of the World Series is created equal, some include pitch-by-pitch, edge of your seat drama but in this Game 7, the Royals cruised to victory, 11-0 in front of a capacity crowd inside Kauffman Stadium. These World Series Champion Royals became immortal in the midwest. The World Series roster included: Lonnie Smith, Willie Wilson, George Brett, Frank White, Jim Sunberg, Steve Balboni, Darryl Motley, Buddy Biancalana and World Series MVP Bret Saberhagen. Autographed memorabilia from any one of these players may not hold strong value over team but if you were lucky enough to get a team signed baseball from this team, that is where the value lies. A combo item signed by George Brett and Bret Saberhagen is a strong piece of sports memorabilia. Those lucky enough to witness both World Series titles would love this World Series Ticket Collection featuring replica tickets from both the 1985 & 2015 World Series.

2015 World Series Memorabilia
The Royals rode the momentum of a great 2014 campaign to qualify for the postseason with a league leading 95-67 record. Dayton Moore pulled the trigger mid-season to acquire All Star Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist to an already first place club. These acquisitions paid off when Cueto got the ball in the postseason and Ben Zobrist continued to come up with clutch hits. The Royals scratched and clawed through the Houston Astros in the ALDS then outlasted the Toronto Blue Jays in six games to advance to their second straight World Series. When November rolled around, the Royals lineup consisted of: Salvador Perez, Eric Hosmer, Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar, Mike Moustakas, Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain. The pitching staff for Kansas City was led by Yordano Ventura, Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto and anchored by Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera. Ned Yost was on his game for most of the postseason, pulling the right strings when needed and had his Royals running on all cylinders. The Royals closed out the World Series with a remarkable comeback win at Citi Field. The key play in the World Series was the Eric Hosmer slide to tie the game. Christian Colon came off the bench to take the lead then the rest is baseball history. Wade Davis recorded the final out via strikeout. The best memorabilia from the 2015 fall classic would be a team signed Major League Baseball, a photo of Wade Davis getting trampled on the mound or a photograph of Eric Hosmer’s daring dash home.

Down on the Farm
Kansas City Royals memorabilia collectors are waiting anxiously for top prospects Hunter Dozier, Jorge Bonifacio, Matt Strahm, Kyle Zimmer and Chase Vallot. Prospecting for autographs can be a tricky business venture. Royals fan know this especially after hearing about Top Prospect Bubba Starling for years only to see him fizzle out in the Minor Leagues. KC collectors who bought into the idea of prospecting did well when Dayton Moore’s top talent reached the bigs and ultimately won the World Series.

Prospecting MLB Prospects

The state of Major League Baseball is as strong as recent memory. The MLB leaderboards have been littered with twenty-somethings posting gaudy numbers at such an early age. Rookie of the Year and MVP are becoming almost synonymous is some respects. Kids fresh off the draft boards are rising through the ranks after a year or two in the Minor Leagues. Pitchers are hitting triple digits routinely on the radar gun and these young batters are turning on those fastballs are knocking out of the park. Truly a special era for America’s Pastime.

With so many bright stars joining the MLB ranks, which players are the best for collectors to target? Which young stars are already priced too high based on hype? This Sports Collectibles exclusive post will answer all questions regarding the cream of the MLB crop.

No Ceiling – Collector’s Choice
Francisco Lindor – The next great MLB shortstop is on our hands. Lindor’s smooth fielding, contacts hitting, base running and charisma have been on full display in his young, successful career. The word “Cleveland” across his chest is the only reason he is not getting the press other young players have gotten. In baseball circles, Lindor is one of the most exciting players in the game. Worth the price of admission. Lindor has the glove like Omar Vizquel and can hit like Derek Jeter. The total package for a shortstop. His prices are beyond reasonable at this time. Worth the investment.

Nolan Arenado – Sure, the thin Rocky Mountain air helps batters in Coors Field. But there is no home field advantage for Nolan Arenado’s fielding. Arenado’s acrobatic, incredible glove and arm have earned him consecutive Gold Glove awards in his first two seasons. The power and the fielding are going to be there for the long haul. Arenado seems destined to bring Colorado their first MVP since Larry Walker in 1997. If Arenado played in a larger market, he would be parallel to the likes of Harper, Trout and Bryant. Sustainable future, good price.

Xander Bogaerts – The X Man leads a young core of Red Sox into 2016 and beyond. Bogaerts is a hitting machine. If we loved Nomar’s early career offense, Xander has that and more. Bogaerts is a sure bet to become Boston’s star after the retirement of David Ortiz. Bogaerts stars on the infield and plays in a major baseball market. He has already won a World Series and will have many midsummer classics in his future. An easy choice for a great Red Sox career. Fan favorite.

Manny Machado – i.e. Cal Ripken Jr, Brooks Robinson. Machado’s shows off all five tools on a nightly basis at Camden Yards. Orioles fans have been spoiled with shortstops and third basemen for decades now. Machado appears to be every bit as talented as his predecessors. Machado’s silky fielding paired with MVP caliber batting will allow him to enjoy a successful career. Machado may very well be the best player in the game today. No reason to think he will not be the best tomorrow either. A sure bet. A transcendent talent.

Star Ceiling – Popularity Kings

Kris Bryant – The Cubs are the toast of the league and nobody is more responsible for that then 2015 Rookie of the Year, Kris Bryant. Bryant’s talent, demeanor and hope he has given fans is unmatched in the MLB. Bryant is as about of a sure thing as there can be. Collectors are also aware. His prices have eclipsed his fellow young stars. Bryant is approaching Trout level as far as pricing goes. A great player, projectable success but there is just too much out there.

Noah Syndergaard – The perfect fastball. The perfect nickname. Noah “Thor” Syndergaard has the look of a Cy Young and popular player for years to come. Similar to Bryant, Syndergaard broke onto the scene with a popular teams and had success in his first postseason. His fastball is not going away and neither is that NYC fame. Noah boasts a triple digit fastball and over triple digit autograph already at age 23. Get the autograph today or the price may skyrocket.

Corey Seager – The Dodgers are undoubtedly Kershaw’s team but the future is on the shoulders of tall short stop, Corey Seager. Seager is on pace for Rookie of the Year consideration and possesses everything you would like to see in a blue chip prospect. Corey is a very approachable guy and his swing is here to stay. Seager will be a staple in LA for years to come. Lots of Seager autographs out there, lots of hype. Not great value.

Carlos Correa – The Astros savior, Carlos Correa is one of the biggest names in today’s game. The product of Puerto Rico won the 2015 American League Rookie of the Year and is on a great pace for 2016. Correa was the #1 Pick a few years back and progressed quickly through the Minor Leagues. His impact lifted the Houston Astros to an improbable postseason appearance in 2015. Correa and Machado are truly the class of young power hitting infielders moving forward. Lots of product circulating. Not the best buy at this time.

Sleeper Level – Worth A Glance
Gregory Polanco – Overshadowed in his own outfielder Gregory Polanco quietly has put together an excellent 2016 campaign with his long frame and five-tool skill set. If his Pirates can make it out of the Wild Card Game, the national exposure will help uncover of the hidden gems in the National League. Potential MVP talent. Multiple All-Stars in his future.

Jurickson Profar – Jurickson very well could be listed in all four categories. He’s been a #1 prospect; he has been deemed a bust. But where he stands right now, he is stationed under the radar because he has not had a lot of the instance success that many from this 23 and under club have enjoyed. Still crazy talented and a potential impact player in the 2016 MLB Playoffs. Many collectors have moved on. Good buy low opportunity.

Steven Matz – His stats indicate it is hard to outshine this kid, but Matz is the fourth most popular pitcher in the heralded New York Mets starting rotation. Matz is a native of New York and has that “it” factor that you want to root for. He will not blow 100 mph smoke by you, but has that crafty left skill set similar to Tom Glavine. On a staff like the Mets, he will enjoy long success and become a household name. Good value for autograph.

Mookie Betts – Can I copy and paste Xander Bogaerts’ rationale? Betts is no second fiddle to anyone. Bogaerts and Betts are the new face of the Boston Red Sox. Big Papi’s 2016 Farewell Season is overshadowing Betts’ tremendous season and potential. Betts exhibits great speed, power at the ripe age of 22. Betts’ learning curve has been admirable in 2016 and the peripherals suggest he is no fluke. The Red Sox look destined for a fair shot at a late 2010’s dynasty. Bet Betts.

I’ll Pass – Saturated, Overhyped
Yaisel Puig – Puig could have graduated this list as “prospect” but the book is still out on Yasiel. Many analysts wonder if he will ever be the player we saw when he broke onto the scene in 2013. Consecutive underwhelming seasons. Yasiel Puig grabs the headlines weekly but at this stage in his career, his autograph is over circulated and not worth the price.

Byron Buxton – If a Minnesota Twins prospect is turning heads, he must be a special talent. Buxton may very well just be in a funk as I write this, and could be a perennial All-Star in the American League. This could be the overreaction I referenced in Profar’s case but he carries a whole lot of hype without results. Not going to call him a bust, just not going to claim him a collector’s favorite target at this point in time.

Michael Wacha – Wacha took the 2013 Playoffs by storm with his dazzling performance on the mound. Not predicting injury or anything, but I have trouble seeing a long, long career for Wacha. I see more Mark Prior than Adam Wainwright in his repertoire. His biggest moments in the MLB may be behind him. Seems like a trade candidate in the near future, hurting his collector value. For the price and for the future, not big on Wacha’s career.

Joc Pederson – Pederson was the toast of Los Angeles during the first half of his rookie 2015 campaign. Joc was blasting bombs into Chavez Ravine. Pitchers adapted to his power stroke and Pederson nosedived in the second half. Do not see long-term MLB success with Pederson. Can very well be an Andre Ethier type Dodger, but that is not going to move the needle on the Memorabilia Scale.
