The expectations are high for football fans in Nashville as the Titans kickoff the 2017 NFL season. 2016 was a building season for the young Titans roster. Stars Marcus Mariota, Delanie Walker and DeMarco Murray paved the way for the deep run in 2017 in a winnable AFC South division. A 9-7 finish has fans in Nashville excited about the future. Fans are excited to see how 2015 Heisman winner, Derrick Henry grows into his back-up role as a change of pace runner. The Tennessee Titans look to make strides entering the 2016 NFL season after struggling and ending 2015 with a last place, 3-13 record in the AFC South. Quarterback Marcus Mariota enters his second season after showing glimpses of greatness as a rookie. Tennessee will need him to mature quickly in order to contend, and he does have some help at the running back position. Former Cowboys and Eagles back Demarco Murray was signed in the offseason and the Titans used their second round draft pick on Alabama Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. If Murray struggles as he did at times with Philadelphia in 2015, expect the team to give Henry more opportunities to carry the load. The Titans top target for Mariota will again be tight end Delanie Walker, who was a Pro Bowl selection last season. The wide receivers are mostly unproven, with two newly acquired players in Rishard Matthews and rookie Tajae Sharpe projected as starters. Veteran Andre Johnson could help the team, but Tennessee will need Justin Hunter and Kendall Wright to emerge as reliable targets for this offense to improve. Defensively, the Titans have balance and potential. Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey was a Pro Bowler in 2015 and veteran outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan look to have impact as pass rushers. The secondary is led by safeties Rashad Johnson and Da’Norris Searcy, with cornerbacks Jason McCourty and Perrish Cox looking to have bounce back seasons in 2016. The good news for Titans fans is that the AFC South is arguably the most attainable division for any of the teams, with the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Titans all able to make their claim as the top team in the division.
